Competitor Research for Newsletter Ads

What is the most efficient way?

Initially, I used to spend hours crafting the perfect ad for my newsletter. The design is spot on, the copy looks great, but when I launch it… the results were underwhelming.

If you're stuck like I was, I'm gonna tell you what I did to rapidly scale my newsletters.

It's simple: instead of guesswork, borrow inspiration directly from the pros.

By spying on your competitors, you’ll discover what resonates with your shared audience, saving time and money on trial-and-error.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Start with a purpose. Define what you want to learn—Is it ad design? Messaging? CTA strategies?

  2. Stay organized. Use tools like Notion or Trello to save and categorize your findings.

  3. Experiment and iterate. The goal isn’t to copy but to learn and improve. Test what you’ve discovered to see what works for your brand.

  4. Be consistent. Competitor research isn’t a one-time task. Make it a habit to check in regularly.

  5. Save Time. If you don't want to do any of the above, get ATN Pro with ready-to-use winning ad templates that you can use to run ads in minutes!

Facebook Ads Library:

Facebook Ads Library is a goldmine for competitive research.

It’s a free, searchable archive of every ad running on Meta’s platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger).

Pros: From visuals to copy and even targeting information, this tool gives you a front-row seat to your competitors' strategies. Look at what’s currently running. Notice:

  • Ad formats (video, carousel, image)

  • Copywriting style (formal, quirky, persuasive)

  • Call-to-action buttons (Subscribe Now, Learn More, etc.)

Cons: You have to manually search every competitor for newsletters.

So, you would have to create a list of competitors, manually search them every time, and not all of them would be running ads so you might potentially hit a dead end.

💡Create a folder of screenshots or save links to the ads you find in Notion or Trello. Over time, you’ll see patterns in your competitors’ advertising efforts.

Foreplay:

If you’re in the creative field, Foreplay is the go-to platform for ad inspiration.

Think of it as Pinterest, but specifically for high-performing ads.

Pros: You can create your own boards to save and analyze competitor ads.

You can also look at competitors’ ads side-by-side to spot commonalities and areas where you can stand out.

Cons: It is available at a paid subscription basis.

You will also have to spend time and effort in replicating the ads that you like.
